#SUNYSA My first days on the job! June 12, 2014

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams!!”

Wow, these last few weeks have been a whirlwind of excitement! All of the staff at #SUNYEmpire and #SUNY System have been amazing during the process of the Swearing In ceremony and everything else that has come up during this process. I have learned a great deal about myself and all of the the people who surround me each and every day. What an amazing group of people I have in my life!! A special thank you to Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, Emeritus President Stuart Steiner from my Alma mater #SUNYGCC and President Merodie Hancock from #SUNYEmpire plus Dr. Larene Hoelcle, my family/friends, members of my #SUNYFamily, and the SUNY interns, staff, and administrators.

Some of the #SUNYSA Executive Board, our advisors, SUNY staff, the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor Dr. Beth Bringsjord, and Chancellor Nancy Zimpher had a great conversations about our SUNYSA goals and the system wide SUNY Initiatives. We did some brainstorming on upcoming issues, concerns, and ideas surrounding our #463,000Students and the ways that we can help out each of our #64Campuses!

During the last week I have had the honor and privilege to attend SUNY Empire State Colleges Northeast Center, Center for Distance Learning, and Genesee Valley Centers (GVC) graduations! I recently (on Sunday the 8th of June) graduated with my BA in Photojournalism/Documentary Production from GVC. I am so proud to have accomplished this goal and dream! The interesting thing about my graduation is that I have been acting in my official capacity as a member of the SUNY Board of Trustees during the SUNY Empire State College’s graduation circuit. These graduations have been my first duties as a Trustee and I am pretty proud to be serving as a Board member.

Today, I am traveling to NYC to attend the graduation ceremonies of the SUNY ESC’s Metropolitan Center tonight and the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies tomorrow. On Saturday, we will be attending the Long Island Centers grad ceremony as we wrap up the all of the SUNY Empire State College’s graduations.

Life is good!!

It is almost a wrap! #Transitional2014 June 1, 2014

I woke up this morning reflecting on the process of this transition into the role of President of SUNYSA. There has been so much prep and time put into building a great team to represent our 465,000 #SUNY students. This process is winding down as we move into the election/confirmation stage of Transitional!  We had 12 director’s positions to be filled and I received 22 applications from some amazing students leaders who were ready, willing, able, and all very qualified to hold the positions.

The interview process was pretty intense and I have to thank so many people for their hard work and dedication as they helped me with and through this process. It is amazing how much I have grown and what I have learned over the last couple of months to get to the point that we are at this morning.  We will be heading into the election process in less than two hours.  I know that everyone is nervous and excited to get started!

I truly amazed at the caliper of students that we have within the #SUNY system and it inspires me as I have had the privilege the listen to their ideas on how we can, not only, reach out to our students but also try to learn as much as we can for those students.  Last night, we held a brainstorming session to work on our goals for this upcoming year.  Each group broke out into their own groups first to see what they thought their goals would be for the year and when we all came back together I was blown away that 90% of ALL of our goals were the same coming from each group.  I feel that this group of student leaders has a pretty good grasp on the students issues and also the SUNY initiatives as we work to do our best to advocate for our students.

Stay tuned as there is more to come!!

Transitional for #SUNYSA May 31, 2014

#SUNYSA is hosting Transitional at the Beaver Hollow/ The Biggest Loser Resort Niagara. This resort is so beautiful/relaxing and the staff has been amazing to work with.

Transitional is a time for us to come together to plan our goals, network with newly elected Executive Board and representatives, and to elect our directors. We will have time to participate in some team building, bonding around a campfire, and learning more about our new positions and each other! Additionally, the reps will receive their campus assignments!

The first meeting went really well and it was great seeing everyone again.  We have so many issues and concerns that we will need to focus on during the upcoming year as we are advocating for our #SUNY students. I totally enjoyed sitting around the campfire, eating S’mores, and talking/bonding with everyone.  We had some interesting and informative conversations which covered the gamut of financial aide, veteran’s issues, politics, and beyond!

I am looking forward to tomorrow as we team build and learn more about our directors.  What a great group of student leaders that are ready, willing, and able to give of themselves for the serve of others. I talked with the group about participating in a couple community service trips to New Orleans and areas on the East coast which were devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

SUNYSA…Let’s get this year started!! May 25, 2014

On April 6, 2014, I was elected to be the President of the Student Assembly for the State University of New York (SUNYSA) and I will be a voting member of the SUNY Board of Trustees.  The State University of New York (SUNY) is the largest comprehensive system of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States with a total enrollment of 465,000 students plus 1.1 million adult education students spanning 64 campuses across the state.

SUNYSA is the official organization by which SUNY students can participate in University-wide governance. We provide a forum for consultation and the exchange of information between students, the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees. We advocate for our 465,000 students regarding issues such as: tuition, military and veterans issues, Education Opportunity Program (EOP-http://www.suny.edu/attend/academics/eop/), Child Care Services, edTPA, textbook affordability seamless transfer, Blood Donor Equality, support for Open SUNY, Contingent Faculty Pay Equity, just to name a few.  For more information, please visit: http://system.suny.edu/university-life/student-assembly/ and http://www.studentassembly.org/.

I know that the Executive Board and myself are ready to start the year which starts this Friday!  We will be hosting Transitional which is a three day event in which all of the new and returning Representatives, appointed Directors, Executive Board, and Advisors can come together to plan our goals, network with newly elected members, and to formally elect the Directors. Additionally, the Representatives will receive your campus assignments.  There are 16 Representatives for our 64 campuses, 12 Directors, and 4 Executive Board Members.

I will be blogging about my experiences as the SUNYSA President throughout the year.  Please feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to provide the answers and/or find the answers for you!  I am excited to get started this weekend as our 2014-2015 term of office officially starts on the 1st of June!!  We have a great Executive Committee and I know that we will be hitting the ground running with the goals created this weekend.

Please stay tuned for more information about SUNYSA, updates, pictures, etc.  Thank you for checking out my blog and enjoy the rest of the long weekend!!

To our all of our active duty military and veterans and your families, thank you for your service and sacrifice!!
