#SUNYSA Pretty amazing! July 14, 2014

It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the half way point in July and only a couple of weeks from our first official SUNYSA Executive Committee (EC) Meeting, UAlbany is be hosting us for the first meeting.Thank you to everyone at UAlbany!!

The EC will have a great opportunity during our first ever SUNYSA Day at SUNY System Administration on Friday, August 1, 2014. The SUNYSA Day is meant to give all of us face time with top SUNY staff who will be providing us with up-to-date information on the SUNY wide initiatives and issues that concern our students.

I am pretty excited about the new format of our monthly EC meetings. We are breaking new ground with the Friday evening Town Hall Meeting in which any students from a campus within a 50ish mile radius of the host campus are invited to attend to discuss any ideas, issues, and/or concerns with the EC.  The meeting is also open to any alumni, faculty, and staff as we try this avenue to help us to better advocate for our #SUNY students!

This forum will help us to have a better understanding of the needs which will be addressed internally, with the proper SUNY staff, and/or as we move to formulate the 2014-2015 Legislative Agenda.

Another amazing aspect of the new format is to have the host campus establish a community service project for the EC, students, alumni, etc. to be engaged in while we are visiting their campus.  This project could be anything from donating non-perishable food items, gently-used children’s books or winter clothing to a hands on project on Sunday morning before we all head back home. Giving a hand up can truly change your life!!

Here is the list of our upcoming EC meetings and the Fall Conference location and dates:

#SUNYSA Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Center Building Dedication July 1, 2014

I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Center building dedication yesterday in Buffalo. I did not grow up in the Buffalo or WNY area or New York State for that matter so I never fully understood what Mr. Eve had accomplished in his 36 years in the State Assembly as the champion for higher education opportunities for everyone.

“This building really represents what he stood for. He stood for children, he stood for education, he stood for investing in communities and most importantly, aside from investing in communities, Arthur Eve stood for investing in people,” said Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, D-New York.

I received an invitation to be a part of this celebration as part of my role as the SUNY Student Assembly President and a member of the SUNY Board of Trustees and I was excited to have been asked. In accepting this invitation, I did my due diligence to find out more about this man and what he stood for. Quite frankly, I was so inspired by his hard work, dedication, determination, and passion for the issues surrounding making a difference for the students, past, present, and future. If it were not for the efforts of Arthur O. Eve and the other like-minded people during his career the course of many lives would be different today. The lives of multiple thousands of young minds have been and continue to be changed through the hard, tireless work of Arthur O. Eve.

In the words of Nelson Mandela:

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

I believe that Arthur O. Eve knew that education would be the catalyst for the change in this world and he moved heaven and earth to make sure that ALL students would have that opportunity!!

It is almost a wrap! #Transitional2014 June 1, 2014

I woke up this morning reflecting on the process of this transition into the role of President of SUNYSA. There has been so much prep and time put into building a great team to represent our 465,000 #SUNY students. This process is winding down as we move into the election/confirmation stage of Transitional!  We had 12 director’s positions to be filled and I received 22 applications from some amazing students leaders who were ready, willing, able, and all very qualified to hold the positions.

The interview process was pretty intense and I have to thank so many people for their hard work and dedication as they helped me with and through this process. It is amazing how much I have grown and what I have learned over the last couple of months to get to the point that we are at this morning.  We will be heading into the election process in less than two hours.  I know that everyone is nervous and excited to get started!

I truly amazed at the caliper of students that we have within the #SUNY system and it inspires me as I have had the privilege the listen to their ideas on how we can, not only, reach out to our students but also try to learn as much as we can for those students.  Last night, we held a brainstorming session to work on our goals for this upcoming year.  Each group broke out into their own groups first to see what they thought their goals would be for the year and when we all came back together I was blown away that 90% of ALL of our goals were the same coming from each group.  I feel that this group of student leaders has a pretty good grasp on the students issues and also the SUNY initiatives as we work to do our best to advocate for our students.

Stay tuned as there is more to come!!

I know that the Executive Board and myself are ready to start the year which starts this Friday!  We will be hosting Transitional which is a three day event in which all of the new and returning Representatives, appointed Directors, Executive Board, and Advisors can come together to plan our goals, network with newly elected members, and to formally elect the Directors. Additionally, the Representatives will receive your campus assignments.  There are 16 Representatives for our 64 campuses, 12 Directors, and 4 Executive Board Members.

I will be blogging about my experiences as the SUNYSA President throughout the year.  Please feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to provide the answers and/or find the answers for you!  I am excited to get started this weekend as our 2014-2015 term of office officially starts on the 1st of June!!  We have a great Executive Committee and I know that we will be hitting the ground running with the goals created this weekend.
